Bridging the worlds of European law and literary fiction with a unique perspective shaped by dual Master's degrees in Law, History, and Archival Science
Petr Oprsal (Opršal) is a distinguished professional whose career uniquely interweaves the precision of European law with the creative depth of literary fiction. Originally from Svitavy, Czech Republic, he has built an impressive dual career that spans two decades at the Court of Justice of the European Union while establishing himself as a compelling voice in contemporary Czech literature.
His professional foundation is built on dual Master's degrees in Law, History, and Archival Science from Palacký University in Olomouc. This multidisciplinary education gives him a unique lens that he applies equally to his legal work and his parallel career as an author.
The blend of legal precision and profound historical interest has fueled his writing, resulting in novels like Cestou z věže (Holystic Honza) in 2018, Dokud nás krev nerozdělí (Until Blood Do Us Part) in 2023, and Běsná zem in 2026. His works admirably elaborate the continuity of plot lines starting in the past and smoothly and logically converging to the present.
Today, Petr lives in Luxembourg with his Croatian wife, where he continues to work as a translator and writer, drawing from his rich multicultural experiences and deep understanding of European history and society.

The Raging Land
A thrilling post-apocalyptic novel set in the not-too-distant future in the areas of the former Czech Republic. The state and its structures have disappeared, the last undestroyed cities and communities are trying to survive on their own. The integrating civilizing role of the state and the provision of infrastructure have been partially taken over by powerful corporations, which, however, do not have only noble goals.
Viks leads a mission to expand the influence of one of these corporations from Central Bohemia eastward, all the way to Ostrava, by concluding agreements with individual local hegemons and dominant communities. In doing so, he must face not only local pitfalls and intrigues of the wild world, but also agents of competing corporations from Poland and Austria.
"An action-packed thriller set in a war-torn Czech Republic. Haunting and disturbing. Your future will never be the same." – Martin Goffa/Daniel Gris
"Tough, action-packed, post-apocalyptic. Your journey through Ostrava will never be the same again." – František Kotleta
Dokud nás krev nerozdělí
A gripping mixture of detective fiction and drama inspired by real historical events in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, especially Croatia. Twenty-five years after the war that tore Yugoslavia apart, detective Željko Zorgić and his daughter Nela investigate a cold case involving an elderly man killed during a night of terror unleashed by paramilitaries in the Croatian borderlands.
Was he the victim of fanatical bloodlust or was he targeted for reasons unconnected to ethnic cleansing? As the investigation navigates endless twists and turns, the story gets pushed further back until the Second World War is never far from the traumatic events that unfold. The book depicts local customs, mentality, and environment, including the story of a woman from the Czech minority in Slavonia.
Cestou z věže (The Journey from the Tower)
This deeply personal story follows Honza, the only child of a Czech family raised as a Jehovah's Witness by his mother during communist rule, when organized religion was anathema and members were always at risk of Party crackdowns. The chapters follow Honza's upbringing in the faith despite his father's opposition, and the clandestine preaching and worship meant to nurture his beliefs.
Growing up withdrawn, isolated, and an easy target at school, Honza begins to question the tenets and intolerance of both the regime and religion as he reaches adulthood. This leads him to embark on a journey of self-discovery, with the Velvet Revolution of 1989 intervening to reveal a whole new and different world to him. An authentic exploration drawn from experiences the author knows intimately.
2018
"One evening in January 2014, in a hotel in Prague, I was thinking about how to proceed with my personal life, which had recently experienced a dramatic upheaval. And again it occurred to me that for my relaxation I should return to writing, which I had abandoned many years ago. It occurred to me that it must be something authentic that I know well. And so, I began to describe my childhood experiences under the influence of the sect."
Oprsal reveals that individual memories resonated and matured within him for so long that rendering them in literary form wasn't difficult. The writing process took three years, which he attributes to those being good years, full of joy and new challenges.

In cooperation with the expatriate association ATSL, an author's reading and discussion of Until Blood Do Us Part took place, moderated by Petr Klement. The event was held in partnership with the Czech-Croatian Society, highlighting the book's exploration of Croatian history and the Czech minority in Slavonia.
"When I started writing the story, I had an idea of individual short texts, maybe short stories. That's why the book takes on the form of certain single 'images'. Not until I was actually writing did I decide how I wanted to continue it and what the outcome was going to be."
Oprsal's approach to writing is organic and intuitive, allowing stories to develop naturally while drawing from a deep well of personal experience and historical knowledge that has matured over many years.
"I was an avid reader of books from the age of eight. Of course, mainly adventure books."
"May's books are adventurous, exciting, full of dramatic situations and heroic deeds, but in addition, especially in terms of recent years, they emphasize humanity, tolerance and forgiveness. Their empathy for the weak and anti-racist perspectives were extraordinary for their time."
A formative adventure classic that shaped his early reading experiences.
Among his favorite authors during his childhood reading years.
"As an adult, I experienced several stages of personal development, all of which were due to a certain formative book."
"This book impressed me with its depth of wisdom and the kindness, timelessness and spirituality of the ideas inside. It cannot be read as one continuous story, rather it makes you close your eyes and plunge into your thoughts. At the end, you don't just say 'Wow!, but time to move on.' It's a wave of light that keeps rolling through your brain and veins."
